President Trump flouted tradition and used a press conference before the NATO summit in Europe to blast Democrats and trash the impeachment effort.
The meeting was planned to last just five minutes but ended up evolving into a 52-minute press conference. Trump was with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg during the media event, which was held in London.
Discussion of impeachment is unusual because politicians traditionally eschew talk of domestic politics once they’ve crossed the “water’s edge” and enter other countries.
“It’s a hoax, the impeachment thing is a hoax,” Trump told inquiring reporters. “I think it’s very unpatriotic of the Democrats to put on a performance.”
The president reiterated his belief that the transcript of his July 25 call to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was “perfect.” He said legal scholars have analyzed the transcripts and agree with his characterization of the phone calls.
“Does it cast a cloud?” Trump said. “Well, if it does, then the Democrats have done a very great disservice to the country, which they have.”
“The impeachment is going nowhere. It is a waste of time; they are wasting their time, and it’s a disgrace,” he continued. “It’s a disgrace to our country.”
Trump also praised unity within the Republican Party and pointed to his very strong approval rating within his GOP base.
“There has never been a time when the Republican Party has been more united,” Trump said. “This is a witch hunt by the Democrats.”
